Nepal’s five belts
From the Terai to the Himalaya, different plants grow in each.
- Terai60–300 m
- Siwalik (Chure)300–1000 m
- Middle Hills1000–2500 m
- High Mountains2500–4000 m
- High Himal & Trans-Himalaya4000–8848 m
01
Terai
60–300 m
Hot and flat. Long humid summers, heavy monsoon rain, and mild winters. This is where most of Nepal grows its food.
02
Siwalik (Chure)
300–1000 m
The first low hills above the plains. Loose, fragile soil and thick sal forest. Rain runs off fast here, so landslides are common.
03
Middle Hills
1000–2500 m
Cool green hills with terraced farms and oak, rhododendron and pine forest. Most Nepali towns and villages sit in this belt.
04
High Mountains
2500–4000 m
Cold, steep country of fir, birch and juniper. Snow falls in winter and the growing season is short.
05
High Himal & Trans-Himalaya
4000–8848 m
Above the treeline. Dry, windy, and very cold, with cushion plants and alpine herbs that hug the ground to survive.
